During my experience in last year matriculation, which means am in 300Level because I came in as a D. E student which I made several hilarious observations on the types of people you will likely meet during the ceremony.
The over made-up ladies
You can’t actually exempt these set of people from this kind of list, there’s actually nothing much to say on these set of people, why the hell will a girl pancake her pretty face until it gets ugly and repulsive and unfortunately for some of the girls they sat where there was no fan SWKMD cheesy (sweat won kill dem die).
The extroverted clowns
Lolx, these guys annoy me the most, why can’t extroverts be quiet for once, they talk incessantly and they make funny outspoken noises like ‘3 gbosa’s for our college’ ‘hip hip hip hurray’, Abeg extroverts make ona try hia, we all went for the matriculation and not just you undecided.
The cool, calm or shy guys
I fall into this category, we sit down through out the matriculation cool and calm, not making unnecessary noise and we talk only when very pertinent, These are the kind of guys that are not carried away by the Matriculation, immediately the ceremony is over after taking a few pics, we go to our hostels.
The picture takers
These set of people will start taking pictures from the time they leave home for the ceremony to the time they sleep, as they are walking they are taking selfies, as they sit they take selfies, make i no talk too much, if you don do matric you go understand, I taya for these guys sha sad.
The ‘ where are you ‘ chaps
Lolzz, these one includes every body but our parents suffer it the most and it happens after the matriculation.
here’s how mine went;
Mum : Kunle where are you ?
Kunle : I’m outside the hall, where are you?
Mum : *cuts call*
Kunle : *calls back after 10secs*
Mum : *picks call* kunle where are you nau,
Kunle : I’m outside the hall just beside the gate
Mum : Kunle I’m not seeing you o
Kunle : ah ah just walk outside the gate small na you will see me
then she got pissed off and said
-Kunle its like I would slap you o (Lolz, through the phone cheesy)
and that’s how we continued until I finally spotted her then her anger melted like a candle, then we took some pics and she finally left for home

With the current national display of incongruity, incompetency and selfishness by the leadership of students’ union in the country, the only motion everyone should stand on is that the race of students’ unionism in Nigeria today is full of self interest rather than true patriotism.
The history of students’ unionism in Nigeria can be traced to the ‘West African Student’s Union’ which was founded in London on August 7, 1925 by a group of twenty one law students led by Ladipo Solanke and Herbert Bright. The main aims of WASU was to fight for the independence of West African countries and to put an end to racial discrimination which as at then was climbing it’s peak. In 1956, The ‘National Union of Nigerian Students’ was founded following some structural changes in WASU. NUNS inherited the same idealism from WASU and the students’ union matched on as a platform of change and informed activism.
The union leaders then were purely idealist, fire brands and an undiluted patriot. They suffered all forms of maltreatment – yet remain adamant insisting they are fighting against the forces of feudalism and tyranny – under the administration of a man who has zero tolerance to students’ unionism, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo. NUNS was banned in 1978 under his administration but Alhahi Shehu Shagari regime lifted the ban in 1980, leading to the birth of National Association of Nigerian Students’ (NANS).
The situation has taken a dramatic turn around as one would wonder if the same union that spearheaded the 1978 ‘Ali Must Go’ campaign pressurizing the Federal Military Government of Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo to cancel the increment of school fee and which Reuben Abati described in his article as thus […… In addition, carrots were dangled before students’ union leaders. But these measures hardly changed the resolve of Nigerian students as agents of change. The students’ struggle has had its own share of heroes and martyrs (Segun Okeowo, Kunle Adepeju, Akintunde Ojo, Chima Ubani, Chris Abashi, Emma Ereazu, Chris Mammah, Labaran Maku, Banji Adegboro, Ben Oguntuase, Lanre Arogundade, Omoyele Sowore, Olusegun Maiyegun….) who tasted battles and stood for principles in the many theatres of war (anti-SAP and removal of oil subsidy between 1989 and 1991, June 12 protests, antimilitary campaigns, etc) where and when Nigerian students stood beside labour and other pro-democracy groups to insist that Nigeria can be governed differently for the benefits of its citizens] is still the same union that had fallen from its pinnacle of intellectual doggedness to become mere appendage of political parties that keeps on selling Nigerian students’ birthright for their selfish interest.
The recently suspended Academic Staff Union of Universities nationwide strike actions reached it 95days on the day the strike was suspended. What was the impact of Students’ Unionist towards the immediate suspension of the strike when it was declared on November 4, 2018? Nothing! Aside the usual ranting on social media. Speaking with The Nation in December 2018, NANS president – Bamidele Danielson Akpan – had threatened that the union would disrupt the general elections if students were not back on campus within 14days. During the meetings the union leaders had with Federal Government in January 2019 – days after the warning had been issued out – NANS president was seen on the video saying that “if his constituency was well utilized, he would mobilize 20million votes”. Alas! The unionist betrayed students for 150million naira and a brand new car as reported. If we are familiar with history, we would know that the acts of betrayal is common in students’ unionism. In 2005, NANS under the leadership of Kenneth Orkuma Hembe endorsed the then President of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo for a third term in office. He and his colleague decorated him with an award: “Defender of Democracy”, an award contrary to what NUNS face in Obasanjo’s hand.
The award came after the president made a personal donation of 5million naira. The acts of betrayal is an insults to the memory of those who died in helping to build the association. They must be turning in their graves!
I hereby insist that NANS and student unionism in Nigeria remains a contemporary contradictions. I hereby re-echo the words of Onifade Bello in his book – Student Unionism in Nigeria: Challenges and Strategies – when he wrote, “sadly, when I keep cogitating about the present generation in comparison with the past, what keeps resonating in my mind; shall the labour of our heroes past be in vain?”

Nigeria students’ union is referred to as sector of junk, less reasonable and idle students who have the main aim of climbing political hills and bargain wealth. It is no longer a piece of news that students’ union has called from the market and cannot be sold at an expensive rate.
Students’ Union in the past is the body comprises of intellectuals, good and sound students who have the vision that; it is compulsory on their own part to support the movement for the freedom of those they represent. Series of notable achievement could be traced to them.
Union in the past came because of patriotism, commitment, steadfastness, and demand for the proper funding of education, safeguarding the rights of the Nigeria students from the government.
The transition of power in those years show true picture of internal democracy as this is characterized by commitment, dedication, and patriotism. There will be campaigns, rallies and thorough awareness to the Nigeria campuses and needs to change of power. This mature transition system bring respect from the government and wooed the politicians, even, other unions often request for her solidarity movement in other to champion a course.
In the time of struggle, the Students’ union leader will organize rallies in different institutions across the countries, and finally, a nationwide protest, this oneness, and esprit-de-corp made her unique in the whole of Africa, her unanimous agitation made her a unique pressure group in the whole of Africa.
At inception, there was a commitment, dedication and guarding of internal democracy within her member, it is usually an honor to serve in those capacities as it earns one political capital(fame) after office and it also substantiates the integrity value to be chosen in as executive.
Until recently, when democracy has regained its stance, there is the need for politicians to canvass the vote and this notion made it imperative to reach out to students bodies as the recognizable Students platform which can get information across to over to her members, thus, in return diminish the commitment to monetary motivation.
The political zombies often find their candidate to assume the mantle of students’ union leadership has this rubbed her credibility, integrity and internal democracy were not guaranteed again. The said peace convention turned to the battlefield as it is characterized with name calling, betrayal of trust, vote buying, attacks and assault, manipulation of electoral result, rigging and finally elongation of tenure. This has greatly maimed the patriotism and diligence as this influence irresponsibility and negligence of duty, the union leaders see students’ union bodies as means of climbing political ladder as serving in this capacity will give you the required connection to become a political gladiator.
Also, it has been “factional” as this made it useless and the association of unfaithful students, a conscious effort was made to resolve the fracas but could not be resolved due to political undertone, they now operate under a certain political bloc.
This is instrumental in tainting of her subsequent claims be it legitimate or not as the handiwork of opposition and her protest threat is seen as irrelevant, several actions were taken by political administrators to curb her activities by the detention of her leaders, attacking of protesters by men in uniform, and bribing of her leaders.
These nonsensical actions have forfeited the chance of referring to as pressure group because of the partisan politics of her leaders. The effort of the past unionists has been maimed or put in jeopardy due to selfishness and covetous on the part of the students’ leaders in the country.
It is agreeable fact that Students’ Union in Nigeria; A race of self-interest over patriotism.
