Never Walk Alone (N.W.A) FC has finally secured its place among the champions of the Inter-Hostel Football League Tournament (IHFL TASUED) by winning the fourth edition of the competition. In a nail-biting final against SOS FC, the match ended 1-1 in regular time and was decided by a tense penalty shootout, with N.W.A FC edging their rivals 5-4 to lift the coveted trophy.
The final was a showcase of passion, skill, and determination. SOS FC set the tone early, finding the back of the net within minutes of the game’s start. For most of the match, they seemed poised to take home the title, but N.W.A FC’s relentless spirit kept the game alive. In the dying moments of the match, N.W.A FC found a lifeline with a stunning equalizer that sent their supporters into a frenzy. The penalty shootout that followed was a test of nerves, and N.W.A FC held their composure to claim their maiden title in what was their third final appearance.
This season featured 12 teams, drawn from hostels within the TASUED community, in a highly competitive 7-a-side format. Since its inception in 2019, IHFL has grown into one of TASUED’s most anticipated sports events, bringing together football enthusiasts and fostering a unique sense of camaraderie.
A Rich History of Champions
IHFL TASUED has become synonymous with showcasing raw talent and building a footballing culture among the university’s youth. Over the years, the league has seen fierce competition and celebrated different champions:
• Season One: Amsterdam FC (Ijagun Community)
• Season Two: Paciffic FC (Imaweje Community)
• Season Three: Pinnock FC (Imaweje Community)
• Season Four: N.W.A FC (Ijele Community)
The tournament’s foundation lies in youth development, aiming to create a strong ecosystem of home-grown football talent capable of contributing to future national and international engagements.
A Tribute to Zigima
The maiden edition of IHFL in 2019 was dedicated to the memory of Lasisi Olawale, fondly known as Zigima, a History and Diplomatic Studies student and an active sportsman who tragically lost his life on July 26, 2011, during a police raid on campus. Zigima’s passion for sports and his legacy as a vibrant member of TASUED’s community continue to inspire the league’s vision of unity, growth, and excellence.
As IHFL TASUED evolves, it remains a testament to the power of sports in uniting people and fostering talent. Congratulations to Never Walk Alone FC for their historic triumph and to the organizers and participants for making this season another unforgettable chapter in TASUED’s sporting history!
