Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Professor Folasade Ogunsola, OON, FAS, emphasized the importance of responsibility, values, and character as essential principles for Nigerian youth. Speaking at a dinner held for outgoing Student-Leaders from all UNILAG faculties at the Lagos Continental Hotel, V.I., Lagos, on Sunday, August 11, 2024, Prof. Ogunsola highlighted the pitfalls of “toxic generosity” and an “entitlement mentality,” which she warned are detrimental to the virtues necessary for success in modern society.
During the event, Prof. Ogunsola expressed her appreciation for the Student-Leaders’ cooperation with the university management in maintaining peace and stability on campus. She commended their exemplary character and leadership throughout their tenure, reinforcing the university’s belief in the students’ potential to excel when given opportunities.
Prof. Ogunsola acknowledged that leadership at any level is challenging, particularly in a world where moral values are in decline and resources are scarce. These issues, she noted, have hindered growth and the quality of followership. She voiced her concerns about the increasing dependency, entitlement mentality, and moral decay among youth, warning that these vices must be addressed promptly to avoid a bleak future.
Reflecting on her time as a student at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife), Prof. Ogunsola nostalgically recalled the sense of responsibility, opportunities, and societal respect that accompanied university life in the past, contrasting it with the current culture of corruption and irresponsibility.
She praised ongoing efforts towards moral reorientation and urged the outgoing student-leaders to view their time at UNILAG as preparation for the challenges of the real world. Prof. Ogunsola encouraged them to approach the next phase of their lives with responsibility, diligence, and courage, to re-examine their self-worth, and to avoid shortcuts that could jeopardize their future.
The Vice-Chancellor also reaffirmed the university management’s commitment to fostering stronger interactions with students, aiming to develop a “fit-for-purpose workforce” capable of driving both national and global development.
Dreadlocks, also known as locs, are a timeless hairstyle with roots in various cultures around the world. While they hold significant historical and aesthetic value, maintaining them can be quite complex. Dreadlocks are prone to dryness, frizziness, and tangling, requiring regular care to stay healthy and looking their best.
One of the best ways to care for your locs is through the use of natural oils. Oiling your locs helps promote hair growth, nourish the scalp, and keep the hair moisturized. In this article, we’ll explore some of the best natural oils to keep your dreadlocks healthy and vibrant.
1. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is a powerhouse in hair care, and dreadlocks are no exception. It penetrates the hair shaft, nourishing from within with its medium-chain fatty acids. This oil is excellent at reducing protein loss, helping maintain the strength of your locs. Its antimicrobial properties also help keep your scalp healthy, preventing dandruff and other issues.
2. Jojoba Oil
Jojoba oil, derived from the jojoba plant, closely resembles the natural sebum produced by the scalp. This makes it an ideal choice for moisturizing locs without leaving a greasy residue. Its lightweight nature helps control frizz and promotes hair elasticity, keeping your locs soft and manageable.
3. Argan Oil
Known as “liquid gold,” argan oil is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and fatty acids. It deeply nourishes locs, making them soft and shiny without adding weight. Argan oil is perfect for those seeking thicker, healthier-looking locs.
4. Olive Oil
Olive oil has long been treasured for its benefits in hair care. Rich in vitamins A and E, it strengthens locs and reduces split ends. Olive oil also adds a natural sheen to your hair, making your locs look healthier and more vibrant with regular use.
5. Sweet Almond Oil
Sweet almond oil is an excellent choice for promoting hair growth and thickness, thanks to its high biotin content. It soothes the scalp, preventing dryness and itchiness, while its light texture keeps locs smooth and conditioned.
6. Tea Tree Oil
Extracted from the leaves of the Australian Melaleuca plant, tea tree oil is celebrated for its antifungal and antibacterial properties. It effectively treats scalp issues like dandruff and itchiness and unclogs hair follicles to promote healthy growth. Due to its potency, be sure to dilute tea tree oil before use to avoid skin irritation.
7. Rosemary Oil
Rosemary oil is popular for stimulating hair growth and preventing hair loss. It improves blood circulation to the scalp, encouraging stronger, healthier locs. Its refreshing aroma also makes your hair care routine a soothing experience.
8. Grapeseed Oil
Grapeseed oil is a lightweight, non-greasy option, perfect for those with oily or acne-prone skin. It moisturizes without weighing down your locs, and its rich vitamin E content helps strengthen the hair shaft.
9. Avocado Oil
Avocado oil is deeply moisturizing, making it ideal for dry and damaged locs. Its essential fatty acids improve hair elasticity and reduce breakage, while also soothing an itchy scalp.
10. Castor Oil
Castor oil is renowned for promoting hair growth and thickness. Its anti-inflammatory properties help with scalp issues like dandruff and eczema. Regular use can lead to fuller, healthier-looking locs.
11. Lavender Oil
Lavender oil offers antimicrobial benefits, helping maintain a clean and healthy scalp. Its soothing properties also promote relaxation, making it a great addition to your hair care routine.
12. Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil stimulates blood circulation to the scalp, improving hair growth and health. It also helps control excess oil production, making it suitable for oily scalps, and strengthens hair strands, reducing breakage.
13. Cedarwood Oil
Cedarwood oil balances oil production on the scalp, making it beneficial for both dry and oily hair types. Its antifungal properties help combat dandruff and itchiness, ensuring clean and irritation-free locs.
14. Chamomile Oil
Chamomile oil is gentle and soothing, ideal for sensitive scalps. It reduces inflammation and redness while enhancing the natural highlights in your locs for a sun-kissed glow.
15. Ylang Ylang Oil
Ylang ylang oil has a sweet floral scent and helps balance oil production, making it suitable for various hair types. It also promotes relaxation, reducing stress and contributing to overall hair and scalp health.
These natural oils are excellent for maintaining and nourishing your locs, ensuring they stay healthy, strong, and beautiful.
