The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Aderonke Baiyeroju, has highlighted the prestige associated with earning a UI certificate. She stated that holding a UI certificate is a testament to having successfully navigated rigorous academic challenges and being recognized for both character and scholarship.
Professor Baiyeroju made these remarks while welcoming participants of Course 32 from the National Defence College, Abuja. These participants were at the University of Ibadan for the final part of their Strategic Studies Programme, conducted by the Department of Peace, Security, and Humanitarian Studies. Professor Baiyeroju received the group on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode O. Adebowale, mni, FAS.
Commending the discipline and professionalism of the Nigerian armed forces personnel, Professor Baiyeroju noted the importance of their education at UI. She remarked that graduating from the University of Ibadan—Nigeria’s premier university, first in West Africa, and ranked sixth in Africa—is a significant achievement. She encouraged the graduates to take pride in this accomplishment and to serve as ambassadors who inspire others to pursue excellence.
She further advised the participants to familiarize themselves with the university’s tranquil environment, emphasizing the importance of appreciating the serene campus. “Take the opportunity to explore the university surroundings, enjoy the tranquility, and always carry with you the pride of being part of the University of Ibadan,” she said.
Professor Ruth Adio-Moses, Head of the Department of Peace, Security, and Humanitarian Studies, introduced the participants to the DVC. She explained that the group would spend two weeks at UI, during which they would complete registration, participate in an orientation program, engage in capacity-building sessions, and conduct an oral defense to conclude their Strategic Studies training.
The participants include senior officers from the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Air Force, Department of State Security, National Intelligence Agency, Federal Road Safety Corps, and faculty from the National Defence College.
