The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale, mni, FAS, has counselled Nigerian students, especially those in federal universities to apply for the NELFUND Loan.
He gave the charge while receiving members of the new executive committee of the Federation of Ibadan Students’ Union, University of Ibadan, on a courtesy visit to his office.
The Vice-Chancellor said he has observed that students in the South West are not taking full advantage of the opportunity created by the Federal Government to pay their school fees and to provide monthly stipend for them while still in school.
He counselled all undergraduate students in federal universities to maximise the opportunity granted by the Federal Government and apply for the NELFUND Loan because it will relieve their parents/guardians and help them to focus on their studies.
He explained that students should not allow any misconception to deprive them of the opportunity because the Federal Government had designed the loan scheme in a way that the benefactors (students) will not start to pay back until after two years after participation in the NYSC scheme when they are expected to have been gainfully employed.
The Vice-Chancellor expressed the delight of the University Management in receiving the new executive committee members of the Federation of Ibadan Students’ Union and appreciated them for recognising that he is an indigene of Ibadan, and the first indigene to become a Vice-Chancellor ever since the establishment of the University.
He noted that Ibadan city is known for its uniqueness and one of the most peaceful cities in the whole world, where many people love to settle down because it is an accommodating town.
Prof Adebowale assured the new executive committee members that he will do all within his power to support the association in its various programmes.
The President, Federation of Ibadan Students’ Union, Mr Shuaib Abdullahi, said that the visit was to introduce the new executive committee members and to intimate the University Management with the activities of the association.
He thanked the Vice-Chancellor for giving them the opportunity to pay the courtesy visit.
He highlighted the various activities the association has planned, which include Federation of Ibadan Students’ Union week to be tagged “Ibadan Legend Week: Ose Ibadan.
Also on the courtesy visit were other members of the executive committee, namely Miss Fathia Afolabi, General Secretary; Miss Blessing Akintunde, Assistant General Secretary; Miss Robiat Abduliahi, Social & Welfare Director; and Mr. Qudus Falade, Public Relations Officer.
