THE STATE OF THE NATION – Dapo Oke

    0

UNLESS WE GO BACK TO REGIONAL GOVERNMENT…

I was a guest speaker at 96.3 Super FM radio station, Ijebu-ode on the station’s current affairs program ” State of the nation” with Gbenga James.

I alligned my thoughts along with Dr Olisa Agbakoba’s call for Regional government as a solution to the many Nigerian questions at the moment.

I emphasised that the military brought the nation to this our present predicament following the abrogation of regional government and replacing it with unitary system of government by the Aguiyi Ironsi’s short tenure administration

I reminded Nigerians that the same reasons given by the five Majors for the 1966 coup i.e corruption, nepotism, high-handedness by the government officials etc are still very much with us in multiple ratings

I maintained that creation of states , allignment and re allignment of ethnic boundaries introduced by the military had not been a solution to our issues of national unity rather it had heightened the tensions of minority questions in our polity till date

I remarked that several decades after independence, there had never been a truly people’s constitution that really appreciate our genuine concerns for good governance based on true federalism hence the constant agitation for resource control by some ethnic nationalities

I reiterated that the political class and the elites have failed us hence the need to retrace our steps to a new Constitutional arrangement that will guarantee freedom and even development of infrastructures.

I again re-emphasided that there is need for the Regions to control greater percentage of their resources and work out the best system of government they desire for maximum growth , development and security of lives and properties of their citizens

I also lent my voice to the need for Community policing and regional security network towards solving the current security challenges we are facing .

I queried the sincerity of our lawmakers in all the previous Constitutional reviews and amendments which had only been limited to only electoral reforms

I maintained that unless we also change our socio political value orientation about governance , it will be extremely difficult to forge ahead under a regional government too since human activities dictate the pace of good and responsive governance

I finally concluded that under a regional government it will be difficult for citizens from other regions to claim ownership of land and resources that abounds outside their regions as this will bring sanity to the current issue of farmers and herders clashes

I pointedly remarked that some desperate politicians who want to rule over the territory called Nigeria by all.means are making it difficult for us to restructure the country.

I therefore called on our law makers to rise above national patriotism and give the nation a working Constitutional arrangement that will restructure Nigeria most appropriately along regional government with a loose centre . Obviously, the present federal system of government had failed us as a nation.

These are my candid views and suggestions on this touchy national issue

I zeroed my mind from TASUED say Mariam has she shared her quest for Admission

    0

Mariam Ileyemi, a graduate of Mass Communication, Lagos State University shared her experience in seek for admission in the county Nigeria, with the purpose of motivating the young students who are seriously depressed and giving up in on Nigeria Education system.

Below is her unedited write up

All in the quest for admission, I was at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijebu Ode, and Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), in Abeokuta for POST UTME in 2014.

Up until now, when I flash back to how desperate I was back then, for admission, I would just smile, sometimes laugh at myself for crying at some point.

When TASUED released the admission list and my name unfortunately did not appear, I zeroed my mind from TASUED and opted for Mapoly, since about four people already confirmed their standard as one of the best schools to study Mass Communication.

Unluckily, I was admitted into their part time program to study Mass Communication, which was more expensive than the full time programme.

I felt so hopeless and unlucky that year.

    I was devastated!

After few days of brooding and crying like a baby when everyone was asleep, I went back to the Almighty, told Him to take absolute control and facilitate the best school for me the next year. I became less desperate, continued my teaching job, left computer school for another JAMB tutorial, and today, all is history.

With my second UTME result and just one post UTME, I got admitted in 2015 to study Mass Communication at the Lagos State University.

This is how I recount my experiences, in addition with instances of people who spent more years at home, to my siblings or any Jambite who comes to me for guidance.

There is really no point getting depressed over admission, what matters is that you never give up. If I had given up, I wouldn’t have had that strength to restrategise and prepare for another UTME.

Admission will come but make sure to keep yourself busy, hail and hearty to pursue it diligently and never opt for special centres.

    You can do it!

    The Entitled Survivor

    0

    AbdulAzeez, AbdulMaleek

The power of adaptation could be very indiscernible.

By an unsolicited but mandatory sojourn, necessitated as a result the troubled state of the road, – not so long ago, I routed by a community. At first, I had wholly thought and doubted people could live to survive in such locality.

We path miles and kilometers on a very narrow way, – forest, sounds of flying birds, a convocation of eagles, flock of goats, very few other domestic animals I could gazed from afar, and the sky that spread like canopy above, were our only companions. It was difficult to comprehend how liveable people find it at such environment.

After minutes of miraculous gaze, worries and wonder, we suddenly ran into a small community of people. From a physical judgement, they seem to have their own ‘unusual’ life, the one they are pleased with, in abundance. Kids were playing around in small groups, I could sight a clowder of cats catching soft fun, – normal day activities was going on. We must have intruded their ‘privacy’ and lifestyle, I thought, – as they all stared at us traverse within the minute.

Apparently, I still have some doubt and sceptism about everything.

I disagree with a different conviction of my mind. Later then, I got my consciousness. Of course my mind ran back through the reality of man’s natural tendency to adapt before any situation, eventuality or sort of life.

Yes. I was taught the basics of adaptation in Integrated Science as a characteristic of man during my Junior Secondary School earliest days. I was not, and still not a fan of Sciences, but it has not erode my mind that man was defined with such attribute. This fact has been tested and proven over the time. My recent experience did not left me more unconvinced.

Man have been adapting, conforming, and surviving.

My perceptive faculty drove me down to the historic realities of human beings, substantiated by proven scientific reviews and convictions. Even the archaic chronicles tested the accuracy and correctness about it. I have read about historical accounts of various kinds of people that lived decades and centuries back, the life they lived, and how they survived. Many seem unbelievable, but it’s true they survive.

Man is an entitled survivor. I am. You are. The style of living we are put through, that cut its edges, hammer in its broken pieces, frame its sculpture and design our own preferred system in it. Man have that prerogative, at will.

In most circumstances, we are just strong enough, never to lose, – and just weak enough, never to win. Man sustains his ordeals, and coils it.

In the past, some built a gallant face of absolute supremacy. Enough to wreck down the tallest walls that ever exist. They wanted to maintain their authority. They were brutal, oppressed a lot. They deployed their powers to torment; unleash storm, imprisoned the innocents, damaged businesses and dehumanised lives. They were so fierce, and unrepentant.

On a different equivalent, but with the same intensity and powerful potency, – some instituted a gallery of humanity, promoted a cause of love, friendliness and welcoming humility. They were placid. – At the two ends, a fraction of people survived. Lived afterwards. However, there were victims, but upheld generational continuity and survival.

In our journey of survival, it’s important to be organised, and ruthless. There are some piles. The stuffs we will like to keep. The one we might need later, and have it in storage. The stuffs we have to destroy, and the ones we don’t know what to do with it. Above all, to survive, we desire to be brilliantly decisive.

The events of life may be cloudy, unseen. Yet, we trust our instincts that we’re pathing the way to the survival end, that our struggles are worth it and justifiable on cause, that we are doing our best, – and that we will live and continue to live. Moment like that demand action, an effect to do the needed and necessary thing.

Often, we accommodate more people at our home, although we don’t have enough room. If relatives or non-residents show up (uninformed), we try to adapt. We might borrow mattresses from our neighbours to ensure their comfort. We don’t ask them to leave because we don’t have mattresses. We portray to conform and face the threat against the means. We adapt. We adjust. We survive.

Harmony. That’s a word that stuck in my mind. Harmony. It is not about what’s lasting or permanent. It’s about individual voices coming together, for a moment. And that moment lasts the length of a breath, – to survive all of us.

Behold, I tell you a mystery. We shall not all fall asleep, but we will all be changed in an instant, in the blink of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound and the gone will be back and raised, – and we shall survive.

I’ve learned a great deal through my personal struggles. I’ve learned how to harness the opportunities before me, my strength and my resolve, make them work for me to survive the challenging hours of life. It will not be smooth, but it’s surviving.

I won’t lose sight on a scale of larger mission. I won’t lose my train of thoughts. I understand staying focused requires strength, and there is a morality clause in the contract, I’ll maintain it. I will survive. You will, too.

A worthy two decades, with quadrangle, – in a lone world, at the same time, with loving companionship. The entitled survivor.

    0

It’s no longer news that COVID-19 pandemic has done more harm to our economy in this country in which the educational sector isn’t left out due to the closure of all tertiary institutions across the nation.
Nevertheless, the pending issue between Academic Staff Union Of University (ASUU) and Federal Government (FG) is still on point!

Can we say that the lockdown directive is a blessing in disguise for some of the Tai Solarin University of Education Students’ Union (TASUEDSU) aspirants? As they have developed another campaign strategy to woo TASUEDites to vote for them in the forthcoming election 2020/2021.

The new strategy introduced by these aspirants is know as ‘Teaching-Methodology’. This is a system in which aspirants come under the umbrella of; tutorial, online-coaching, empowerment Programme… etc. to cajole voters.

It’s crystal clear that all these aspirants organizing online Programme freely are using it as a campaign strategy to sell their names and potentials.

However, it’s a welcome development to impact in the academic performance of electorates as an aspirant but you need not be carried away by the noise of the market because TASUEDSU election can be so funny!

The E-election has come to stay in Tai Solarin University of Education Students’ Union (TASUEDSU) and you need to also educate/orientate your supporters on the E-voting procedures.
