TASUED Students Union Position on the Lingering industrial action by ASUU

    0

The Students’ Union of Nigeria’s Premier University of Education, Tai Solarin University of Education Students’ Union wishes to assert and state in clear terms her positions and grievance on the proposed ASUU strike by the national leadership of the staff union.

As the world believes and understands, education remain the most potent weapon for social, economic and political engineering of any nation, Nigeria inclusive. In it resides the faith and future for prosperity and peace. The students world is very unsafe, seems helpless and scared of the state in which the constituency is being treated and attended to by various visitors to our tertiary institutions and the staff unions, most importantly, the visitors (government at all levels).

For the past few weeks, the national secretariat of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has been calling the attention of the government, by implication drawing the attention of members of the general public of the inability of the government to fulfill various clauses and agreements the two parties resolved to.

The Tai Solarin University of Education Students’ Union as a responsible and very concerned stakeholder in the affairs of education, protecting the interest of her members and education as a whole, observes this development and express total dissatisfaction in the way the government has attended to the staff union. Again, it worries us why the rights, welfare and incentive packages of the staffs will be denied or delayed by the government.

We are very aware of the disagreement and conflicting positions of ASUU and Federal Government of Nigeria on the implementation of Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS), an established payment system by the FG for all her workers and the alternative system of University Transparency and Accountability Solution proposed by ASUU.

It is well entrenched that the Federal Government and ASUU had reasonable understanding and signed agreement on the payment system, issues of N22bn earned allowance and other agreements.

We call on the Federal Government and her representatives, particularly, the Ministries of Labour and Employment, Education and Finance to rejig their positions and ensure the right thing is done for ASUU. They should do this with sincerity and passionate consideration for the students and the future of the country that is held at the tips of education.

It should be keenly noted that the future of Nigerian students is on the brink if the proposed industrial action is made to take effect (possibly) tomorrow, August 31, 2021 that the staff union intends to meet, or any day (which is likely soon).

The nine months of wastage as a result of last strike action embarked on by ASUU has done enough damage on the education system, our studentship life and future. As at December 24, 2020 when the strike action was suspended, a lot has went wrong and the system (till moment) still tries to recover from various losses and academic setbacks.

Nonetheless, TASUEDSU believes that the lingering strike action can be averted if the Federal Government respond to the call of the staff union. We also urge the government to ensure it revisit many of her positions and reestablish them in the spirit of developing the education system.

We call on the national, regional, states and chapter leadership and secretariats of ASUU to ensure it continues to be considerate, concerned and passionate when taking her decisions and positions. We understand they have the right to make demands and pursue all legal and moral path for their demands to be respected. At the same time, we urge them to be very considerate as the students lives and future in on the line when industrial actions are activated. ASUU at all levels have the support and solidarity of the student leaderships, unions and bodies, especially over twenty five thousand TASUEDSU members. We shall continue to show solidarity accordingly and partner with ASUU to drive home her demands.

As various Students’ Union in Nigeria is capable of mobilising her strengths and efficacy to ensure what ASUU demands is respected and considered for approval, so far the students are also well captured in the demands.

TASUEDSU call on all other students’ unions in Nigeria, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and National Association of University Students (NAUS) to stand up and rethink efforts to rescue millions of Nigerians from the looming national disaster.

The Tai Solarin University of Education Students’ Union shall remain civil in pursuit of our demands and registering our differences for national attention.

May God bless our Union, and our collective indomitable will!

FROM PLASTIC TO PROSPERITY: HOW A GROUP OF STUDENTS IS CHAMPIONING A GLOBAL CHANGE THROUGH DISCARDED MATERIALS

    0

When Robert T. Davis founded Entrepreneurial Action in Us (ENACTUS), formerly known as Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE), in 1975, little did he know that the impact of the organisation would resonates to the far western part of Africa. More than four decades after, the organisation has over 72,000 volunteers, mostly students who are social innovators driven by entrepreneurial values, across 1,730 campuses in 36 countries, positively impacting the lives of 1.3 million people each year.

In a bid to further pursue the organisation’s vision in creating a better world while developing the next generation of entrepreneurial leaders and social innovators, the ENACTUS team from Tai Solarin University of Education is keen on achieving a greener planet through their innovative projects dedicated to the eradication of plastic wastes on the planet. The usage of plastics ranges from plastic bags, helmets, incubators, equipment for clean drinking water and of course, sanitary pads among many others.

According to a Research Gate publication, the conventional sanitary pads comprises of series of layers such as fluid permeable surface (topsheet), an absorbent core, and an impermeable backing with adhesive. Similarly, from a laboratory analysis carried out by the team, they found out that a sanitary pad contains “bisphenol and 90% plastic.

This forms the basis of the team’s project – the need to reduce plastic wastes and makes the sanitary pads cost affordable to its users. To achieve this, the team launched P’Pal Sanitary Company, the first ever plastic-free sanitary pad company in Nigeria in 2020. They are replacing plastics materials with fibres extracted from banana stems. In comparison with the conventional sanitary pad that takes over 400 years to degrade, this plastic-free sanitary pad “degrades in only three months”, the team leader, Comfort Omiyale uttered excitedly.

Closely related with the plastic-free sanitary pad company is the team’s second social enterprise named Fibban Enterprise. An average lifespan for the usage of plastics materials, most especially plastic bags and pet bottles, ranges from three minutes to five minutes before they are indiscriminately disposed. In addition to taking hundreds of years to dispose, Kelvin Ujeh, an environmentalist states that: “toxic substances are released into the soil when plastic bags perish under sunlight and, if plastic bags are burned; they release a toxic substance into the air causing ambient air pollution”.

These and many more are the reasons why the team’s Fibban Enterprises is campaigning against the usage of plastic bags by stores, restaurants and supermarkets across the country. The enterprise is not only signing a petition against the usage of plastic bags: it is also replacing plastic bags with fibers bags extracted from the stems of bananas.

The “choice for banana fibers hinge on the fact that it degrades quickly, costs almost nothing to extract, and proves as the best material for an environmentally friendly product”, the team lead explained.

Finally, a walk around most university campuses would leave you mystified. The reason is not farfetched: the improper disposal of pet bottles. These pet bottles clog the drainage system and form a horrible sight to behold. Thus, this ENACTUS team from Tai Solarin University of Education creates waste bins from thousands of pet bottles collected from fellow students which are subsequently deployed around the university campus.

All in all, directly and indirectly, this group of students are further pursuing Sustainable Development Goals 1,2,3, 13, 14 and 15 thereby leading a global change in the process.

We pray that the soul of our beloved brother rest in perfect peace.

The SU and other leaders led by Comr. RABIU SODIQ have been on their toes in the school premises to register their displeasures and grievances against the nonchalant and lackadaisical attitudes of our school medical officials towards attending to students.

Sincerely, we want to appreciate and commend the efforts of every students and union leaders who peacefully adhered to our warnings of peaceful protest.

We want to say a big thank you for your cooperation and submission. We hope to do more in other to register out displeasure when things go wrong.

We marched peacefully in solidarity to all necessary points and quarters in the school. We touched the School gate, Cosit Ground, Medical Center, The Senate Building and other places.

At some point, we were invited by the School Management Representatives to have words with us concerning our agitations.

Present at the meeting were The Dean of Students Affairs, The Medical Director, The Deputy Medical Director, The HOD of Computer Science Department, The Chief Security Officer, Members of The Students Affairs Committee, Concerned Students and The Students Union Representatives.

Below are the resolutions of the meeting:

    1. Expired Drugs :
We were able to give instances of cases where expired drugs were administered to sick students who went to the clinic. The Director of Medical adviced that next time cases like this happen, students should go to the Union building with evidence for adequate and immediate attention.
    2. Inadequate Medical Facilities and Equipment :
It is glaring that some important and necessary equipment for the smooth running of the clinic are absent. According to the responses and reactions of the medical officers, THERE WOULD BE CHANGE AND IMPROVEMENTS!.
    3. Apathetic Attitudes of Medical Staffs
It has gone beyond control and measure that some medical staff are known for this ridiculous, inert and half-hearted attitude when attending to medical situations especially when it comes to emergency. Please If you fall victim of any form of unprofessionalism from any medical staff kindly send your reports to the students union with evidence i.e pictures, voice or video record.
    4. Non Availability of Doctors : We have received complains about doctors not being available to attend to patients especially during weekends. Students are left
In pains and agony due to this. We have raised alarm on this trend.

We got report that the school medical does not have enough doctors on ground to balance the shifting on weekends. Some of these doctors would have to visit their families and refresh themselves for the new week.

The SU clearly asked the school management to provide more medical personnels so that their can be a balance.

By God’s Grace, it has been registered that it will be looked into as soon as possible.

    1. Issues on Medical Cards and Face Masks : Reports reached us that students who need to be attended to in emergency situations are always denied treatments if they are not with their medical cards or face masks. It is on this note that we implore and admonish all students to keep a snapshot of their medical card or have their medical card number saved on their phone.

Medical personnels on duty will henceforth accept snapshots as we have agreed on this terms.
This is to make sure that people who are not students do not deny us of necessary medications when the need arises.

In order to extend more safety precautions and to raise emergency alarms when necessary, we asked that the school medical hotlines be displayed to all TASUEDdites so that they can report any act of unprofessionalism to the Students Union immediately they happen.

TASUEDites can now make their complains via these lines :

    08058873389
    08037119487
    08033783270
    08093354475
    08062430767

In order to effectively manage and contain all the issues we have at our medical center, the Student Union is creating a 10 Man Committee that will cut across the five Colleges on campus. There will be 2 representatives from the 5 Colleges we have.

This committee will report directly to the Student Union as we will inform everyone once we have compiled the names.

Dear Tasuedites, your interest will always be the topmost priority as far as this administration is concerned.

We urge you to reach out to us when there are issues like this next time. Your feedback and constructive criticism are also important to us.

Special thanks to those who joined our live session on Facebook today.

We hope to build on this platform so that we can address issues head-on and address your questions.
