FG Takes Over TASUED, Upgrades it to Federal University

Date:

The Federal Government has officially adopted the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ogun State, as a Federal University. This development marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s education sector, as TASUED transitions from a state-owned institution to the country’s third Federal University of Education.

Founded in 2005 by the Ogun State Government, TASUED stands as Nigeria’s first specialised university of education, named in honour of Dr. Tai Solarin, a renowned educationist and activist. With this federal adoption, TASUED becomes the first federally owned tertiary institution in Ogun East senatorial district, further cementing its reputation as a center of academic excellence.

Announcing the decision on Friday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu expressed gratitude to the Ogun State Government for facilitating the transition. He noted that the move aligns with the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening teacher education in the country.

“It is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honour Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who pioneered the revolutionary free education programme in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who dedicated his life to educating young Nigerians and instilling patriotic values,” President Tinubu stated.

He also acknowledged the role of the Awujale of Ijebuland in preserving TASUED’s legacy, referencing the monarch’s crucial intervention in preventing the university’s closure in 2012.

With TASUED’s new status, the Federal Government now directly oversees three Universities of Education: Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri, Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo, and the newly acquired TASUED in Ogun State.

The transition is expected to bring improved funding, enhanced academic programmes, and greater opportunities for both students and faculty members.
