Chidimma Adetshina, the newly crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, recently sat down with BBC News Pidgin to share her emotional journey of resilience, ambition, and triumph that led her to the prestigious title. In a heartfelt interview, she reflected on her path, from competing in Miss South Africa (SA) to finally claiming the Nigerian crown.
“When I heard my name called, I had a sense of relief, a sense of accomplishment… It was a very powerful moment for me,” Chidimma said as she recalled the emotional instance when she was announced as the winner of Miss Universe Nigeria 2024. The moment of victory brought tears to her eyes, as the weight of her achievement and all the challenges she had overcome finally hit her.

But after learning more about the world of pageantry and how it could serve as a platform for empowerment and change, she found herself intrigued. In 2022, Chidimma decided to enter Miss SA for the first time. While she didn’t win, her journey to the top 13 fueled her determination and sparked her competitive spirit.
Not one to back down, she tried again in 2024, competing once more in Miss SA and making a strong impression. However, her story took a new turn when she received an invitation to represent Nigeria in the Miss Universe competition. At first, she hesitated. The timing was difficult, as the Miss Universe Nigeria opportunity came shortly after her departure from Miss SA. Yet, her resilience won out, and she accepted the challenge.
Reflecting on this transition, Chidimma explained how important it was for her to embrace her Nigerian heritage on the global stage. “Winning the crown means so much more than just a title,” she said, expressing her pride and commitment to representing Nigeria in the Miss Universe competition.
